Youngster struck by car

A 9-year-old girl was struck by a car while she was waiting for a school bus this morning near a Greenwood trailer court. Johnson County Sheriff’s Deputy D.J. Blankenship said Brenda L. Ellsworth, Lot 313 R Court, Wheel Estates, was standing near the intersection of Wheel Estates Drive and Peterman Road, two miles west of Greenwood, with a group of other children who were waiting for the bus at 7:16 a.m. According to two of the other children, the Ellsworth girl, was pushed by a playmate backwards into the roadway, where she was struck by a car en route east on Peterman Road. The driver, David K. Griffith, 27, 340 South Court, Wheel Estates, was slowing down for a stop sign at the intersection and tried to avoid the accident but the girl, was struck by the right front fender of the car, Blankenship said. She was treated at the scene for a broken right ankle by the White River Volunteer Fire Department and then transported by Myers Ambulance Service to St. Francis Hospital, Beech Grove.  No further information was available from the hospital this morning.  (Reprinted with permission from the Daily Journal)
