Horses killed in barn fire

Fire destroyed in barn just west of Center Grove High School Friday night, and four horses or five horses were also killed in the blaze, which may have been started from lightning. Firemen from White River and Bargersville were called to the Robert Briggs farm about 7:15 p.m., and were still cooling down the embers about 10:30 p.m. The barn was located on the southwest side of County Roads 700 north and 500west (Stones Crossing and Morgantown Road), just west of Center Grove High School. Neighbors reported there was a “very close” lightning strike during a thunderstorm about 30 minutes before the barn fire was noticed. Units from the White River and Bargersville Volunteer Fire Departments battled the fire, while Greenwood volunteer firemen went on standby at the White River station. Emergency personnel were kept busy Friday night, as White River answered an ambulance call and Bargersville went to a field fire while the barn fire was in progress (Reprinted with permission from the Daily Journal)
