House number should be visible

Residents in rural areas of Johnson County can aid their township fire departments by making sure that their house numbers are easily visible from the road, according to Patricia McDaniel of the White River Township Volunteer Fire Department. Large numbers that contrast with the house color will make it easier for drivers to recognize the home where emergency aid is needed, she said. For those living on rural routes, it is important to have the box number on the mailbox, she said. Like house numbers, the box numbers should contrast with the color of the box and be positioned so the flag isn’t covering them. “Black numbers on a black mailbox are hard to see at night and next impossible with the flag covering the numbers,” she said. If the street doesn’t have a sign identifying it, call the appropriate street department about having signs erected so the street can be identified quickly.  (Reprinted with permission from the Daily Journal)
