House number should be visible
Residents
in rural areas of Johnson County can aid their township fire departments by
making sure that their house numbers are easily visible from the road, according
to Patricia McDaniel of the White River Township Volunteer Fire Department.
Large numbers that contrast with the house color will make it easier for drivers
to recognize the home where emergency aid is needed, she said. For those living
on rural routes, it is important to have the box number on the mailbox, she
said. Like house numbers, the box numbers should contrast with the color of the
box and be positioned so the flag isn’t covering them. “Black numbers on a black
mailbox are hard to see at night and next impossible with the flag covering the
numbers,” she said. If the street doesn’t have a sign identifying it, call the
appropriate street department about having signs erected so the street can be
