Blaze destroys mobile home
Two members of a White River Township family escaped unharmed from their burning mobile home Friday evening, but the family is homeless today as a result of the blaze. Firefighters are still conducting an investigation into the cause of the 5:10 fire at the Joyce Jackson residence, Lot 305 Wheel Estates. Damage was set at $11,000. Fire Chief Bob Wehrman said the mobile home was a total loss and all contents were destroyed. Wehrman said Mrs. Jackson and her daughter were at the home when they discovered the fire, which quickly spread from the trailer to an adjacent utility shed and caused damage to a neighboring trailer occupied by Larry McLean, Lot 304 Wheel Estates. Fourteen White River fire fighters and five fire cadets helped to bring the blaze under control. It took 20 minutes to douse the flames, which observers said could be seen as far away as Greenwood. Fireman responded with two engines and a rescue squad. There were no injuries in the blaze. Fireman remained on the scene for nearly four hours in the sub-freezing temperatures. The Johnson County Red Cross chapter is coordinating efforts to aid the Jacksons. (Reprinted with permission from the Daily Journal)
