Accident knocks power out

A 16-year-old Indianapolis youth was being treated in the emergency room at Community Hospital in Indianapolis at press time today for injuries he suffered in a one-car crash on Stones Crossing Road in White River Township. The extent of injuries due to the victim, Gary N. Smith, was not known at press time. Authorities said Smith was apparently driving eastbound on Stones Crossing Road near the intersection of County Road 400W when he apparently swerved either to avoid an animal in the roadway or an approaching westbound vehicle. Smith lost control of the car he was driving, went off the road, and struck a utility pole. The accident caused a major power outage in White River Township. Officials of Johnson County REMC said approximately 800 customers were without electricity at noon today, because of the damaged utility pole and lines. The outages were mainly in the Bluff Acres, El Dorado and Mark II areas, officials said. Power crews were at the scene at press time and hoped to have electricity restored by this afternoon. He was treated at the scene by Bargersville rescue workers and medics from Myers Ambulance Service then taken to the Indianapolis hospital by Myers.  (Reprinted with permission from the Daily Journal)
