Fire guts home

At least one Greenwood family escaped in nightclothes and no shoes about 11:30 a.m. this morning after they discovered a fire in their rented residence at the corner of Madison Avenue and Longden Street in Greenwood. Firemen from Greenwood battled the blaze in the one-degree below zero chill factor weather. Smoke poured from the old two-story frame home. The house was gutted. Officials said the home, owned by Joe Kieffer may have housed four apartments. Those in the home at the time of the fire managed to escape without injury. The residents were taken to the home of a neighbor, and Red Cross officials were en route to Greenwood to meet them about 12:30 p.m., as the flames continued to engulf the home. Greenwood Police aided with traffic control on the busy street and White River firefighters stood by at the Greenwood Fire Station.  (Reprinted with permission from the Daily Journal)
