Woman injured in fire

A rural Greenwood woman was burned Monday when cooking oil on a stove either blew up or caught fire in the kitchen of her home located near County Road 700N and County Road 600W. The woman, Mrs. Ralph Burtzo, 33, Greenwood Route Three, is reported in “fair” condition at St. Francis Hospital in Beech Grove, where she was taken after the fire. She suffered burns to her hands, arms, legs, and stomach. According to White River Township Fire Chief Bob Wehrman, the woman was engulfed by the flames, but managed to call the fire department and douse the flames by the time firemen arrived at 10:33 a.m. Mrs. Burtzo was treated at the scene by White River Township rescue workers and then transported to the hospital by Myers Ambulance. Wehrman said the fire caused only minor smoke damage to the Burtzo home. The cause is still under investigation.  (Reprinted with permission of the Daily Journal)
