Fire destroys slide

A fire at the Orchard Golf Center on State Road 135 in White River Township at 3:45 p.m. Tuesday destroyed the gigantic slide adjacent to the Center club house. Seven fire trucks, three from White River Township, two from Greenwood and two from Perry Township in Indianapolis battled the blaze, which sent smoke billowing over the golf range. Manager Jim Browning, who said the slide was closed when the fire broke out, listed the slide at $35,000. He said the slide was not insured against loss by fire. Browning speculated that the blaze began in grass underneath the fiberglass slide, and noted that, though it is wired electrically, the power was not on. County and State Police blocked off a portion of the highway after sightseers flocked to the area causing difficult traffic problems.  (Reprinted with permission of the Daily Journal)  See follow-up story HERE.
