Fire hits

A Thursday fire at the home of Larry Voss, Lot 419, Wheel Estates South, Greenwood, resulted in total loss to the trailer and no estimate of damage has yet been determined. White River Township Volunteer firefighters were called to the scene at 10:25 a.m. Fifteen men brought the fire under control after one hour, but they fought the blaze for a total of three hours. Cause of the fire is a possible malfunction with the furnace, according to fire department reports. The White River firefighters were assisted by Greenwood units, who also manned the White River station. The Johnson County Red Cross chapter was called in to assist the family by providing them with food, shelter and clothing. Several firemen were injured throughout the course of fighting the fire. Glen Duthie and John Morris suffered from cold exposure and smoke inhalation, while Dave Fishel suffered from cold exposure and had burning ashes in both eyes. Bob Young, Dale Bancroft, and Joe McAllister also suffered from cold exposure and possible frost bite.  (Reprinted with permission of the Daily Journal)
