Greenwood woman stabbed

       A Greenwood area woman was stabbed critically early Tuesday morning and authorities arrested her 16-year-old foster son in connection with the stabbing incident. The victim was identified as Mrs. Janice Holmes, 46 years old, of 9166 Bomar Lane, west of Greenwood. According to Johnson county Sheriff Jack Means, the stabbing occurred about 6:15 a.m. today at the Holmes residence on Bomar Lane. The sheriff said Mrs. Holmes was stabbed while lying in bed in a bedroom of the home. She suffered stomach and chest wounds. Means said a kitchen butcher knife recovered at the scene was apparently used in the stabbing. Mrs. Holmes' husband, Arnold, a steelworker in Indianapolis, had left work for a short time prior to the actual stabbing incident, the sheriff said. Three other children, a 12-year-old girl and two preschool children, were asleep in the home. Means said the 12-year-old girl told them she heard her mother screaming and ran out of the house, went next door and notified the sheriff's department. Authorities arrived at the Holmes residence and discovered Mrs. Holmes lying in bed with stab wounds. White River township fire department was summoned to the scene to administer first aid. Mrs. Holmes was then rushed to Indianapolis General Hospital where she immediately under went surgery. Sheriff Means said the woman's condition was described as "critical." Investigators questioned the 16-year-old foster son at the home and then took him to the Johnson county jail for further interrogation. Means said the boy, who is the ward of the court in Indianapolis, gave them no information immediately about the circumstances of the stabbing incident. The youth was ordered held in the juvenile section of the jail pending an appearance before the juvenile judge. The name of the youth is being held was withheld by juvenile authorities. Sheriff Means said the boy was being "held now on charge of assault and battery." Investigation into the stabbing continued Tuesday afternoon.   (Reprinted with permission of the Daily Journal)
