Road 37 crash injures seven, head-on reported

Sheriff's authorities reported seven persons were injured in a two-car collision at the junction of State Roads 37 and 144 in Johnson County. In a head-on car-truck crash early Monday on State Road 135, an Indianapolis driver was seriously injured. The crash on State Road 37 Sunday occurred shortly after 6 p.m. The collision involved a 1965 Ford driven by David Drake, 23, Indianapolis, and a 1969 Ford Lincoln driven by Daniel Heimsath, 27, Indianapolis, according to deputy sheriff William Wollen. Authorities said Drake's vehicle was struck broadside by the Heimsath car which was northbound on State Road 37. Heimsath had the right-of-way, investigators said. Drake, his wife Linda Drake, 20, and a two-year-old daughter Amy, were injured. In the Heimsath auto four passengers. They were identified as Barbara Calhoon,14; Monty Terry, 24; Terry Terry,21; and Bonnie Terry, 15; all of Indianapolis. The Drake woman and her daughter were taken to Johnson County Memorial Hospital and the other injured were taken to Indianapolis' Methodist Hospital. Authorities said the head-on crash on State Road 135 Monday morning occurred near Stones Crossing about 5:30 a.m. In the collision were a 1970 Ford pick-up truck driven by James Kidwell, Indianapolis, and a 1968 Oldsmobile operated by Terrence Woddard, of Martinsville. Deputy sheriff Bob Wagner said Woddard apparently attempted to pass another vehicle and his auto collided with Kidwell's pick-up head-on. It was foggy at the time of the crash, he said. Woddard was only slightly injured. Kidwell was rushed to Indianapolis' Community Hospital where his condition was listed as "fair" shortly before noon.  See related story HERE(Reprinted with permission of the Daily Journal)
