Fire destroys mobile home, contents in Wheel Estates
A $10,000 fire Saturday night completely destroyed the mobile home of Mr. and Mrs. Wasyl Taran in Wheel Estates (lot 280) during a busy weekend for the White River Township Fire Department. Fireman Dave Moore, Greenwood, received first and second degree burns fighting the blaze at the 62-foot house trailer. He was treated at Johnson Memorial Hospital and released. Taran, 20, and his wife Kathy, were visiting relatives at the time of the fire, which was discovered shortly before 7 p.m. by a neighbor, Linda Prather. She reported that she heard a “crackling” noise and after looking out, saw flames shooting from the Taran home. Firemen contained the blaze in about 45 minutes and prevented the flames from spreading to nearby mobile homes. The cause of the fire, which was thought to have started near the trailer’s furnace, is under investigation. Wheel Estates is located off the Johnson-Marion county line. In other activity, White River firefighters were called to extinguish a car fire at the United service station, State Road 135 and Smith Valley road, at 3 a.m. Saturday. Later, at 10:02 p.m. Saturday, they were called to extinguish a grease fire in the kitchen of the El Dorado Country Club. Another automobile fire on Center Street brought out the crew again at 1:45 p.m. Sunday. They contained the blaze within thirty minutes before later making a 7:33 p.m. fire run to the Mount Pleasant Standard service station at U.S. 31 and County Line Road.
