Dog alerts family to house fire

A family pet dog awoke a rural Greenwood family early today after a fire broke out in the basement of the home, and firemen said the barking dog probably prevented extensive damage from occurring. There were no injuries. The fire was reported at the Lawrence Smith residence, Greenwood rural route three. The home is located on Olive Branch Road near Mullinix Road. White River firemen were called to the home at 3:18 a.m. Firemen said an electrical fire broke out in the Smith’s basement, causing considerable smoke. The family was awakened by their dog which was barking and, according to firemen, Smith was able to extinguish the electrical fire before it could spread. White River firemen reported two other fire runs over the weekend. On Saturday at 2:11 p.m. firemen were called to the Critchfield addition where a trash fire was reported by Candy Harrison. Firemen said the spread to a garage at the Harrison home, causing $50-$100 damage. At 1:40 p.m. Friday firemen were called to extinguish a trash fire at the Claude Royston residence on County Line Road.                 (Reprinted with permission of the Daily Journal)
