Three units called to farm fire
An estimated 100 acres of farmland
burned for nearly three hours Tuesday afternoon east of Greenwood before being
extinguished by three volunteer fire departments. Units from Greenwood,
White River Township, and Bunker Hill of Marion County were called to the scene
of the farmland fire located on the Merriott Estate at 1:25 p.m., Tuesday.
The smoldering field was first noticed by a Greenwood policeman who reported a
possible fire in the area south of Greenwood Road near Emerson Avenue shortly
after 1 p.m. Greenwood Fire Chief Dick VanValer investigated the report
and called the Greenwood unit at 1:25 p.m. Additional units from White
River and Bunker Hill were also summoned to extinguish the blaze of unknown
origin before 4 p.m. (Courtesy of the Daily Journal)
