White River landmark destroyed by fire

A fire on Morgantown road near Mount Pleasant church, the evening of January 20, destroyed on the earliest landmarks in northern Johnson County, the old Presser homestead.  The oldest part of the structure, the brick section, was said to have been built in 1836, by Jack Start’s great-grandfather.  Later it was purchased by John Presser.  There are numerous descendents in White River, Greenwood and other parts of central Indiana, but Miss Anna Presser of Greenwood is the only living member of the late Mr. Presser’s family.  She will be 88 years old May 21.

         C. Wynn Gregg is the owner of that part of the Presser farm on which the house stood.  Of course much of the brick section still stands.  It was bitter cold when the fire broke out and our fire department worked against great hazards in the struggle to extinguish the flames.  Much credit is due not only the department, but the neighbors who volunteered help.

Mr. and Mr. Harold McClain and their six children lived in this house for some time.  The fire destroyed all of their belongings; however the response of neighbors and church groups to this need has been gratifying.  We are told that a great deal of clothing has been received.  Some furniture has been donated too, however, the family needs a house most of all.  Of course kitchen utensils and a variety of equipment and supplies will be necessary.

Mrs. McClain is the former Mary McGinnis, daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. W. E. McGinnis, and it is their home that the family has found refuge.  Mrs. McGinnis’ invalid mother, too, is a member of the household.  Two of the McClain boys stay nights with their father’s brother and family, and a neighbor is caring for the two younger girls.  Just one little girl is under school age.   The family has expressed appreciation for the fine assistance and the sympathy of friends and neighbors(Reprinted with permission from the Indianapolis Star)
